Healthy Building Inspections
catch pollutants before they catch you
Suffer from allergies or asthma in your home or office?

Our clients are ready to improve their indoor environments
and need to know what allergens are present and where to begin mitigation. Whether you're allergic to pollens and molds, or dust mites and formaldehyde, the first step in reducing your symptoms is learning what to target.
Challenge
The sniffling, scratching, sneezing and wheezing symptoms of
allergies can be irritating at best, and debilitating at worst. It is
frustrating not knowing what triggers your allergy symptoms and feeling out of
control.
Solution
HBI can test the air and dust in your building and tell you
what microscopic allergens are present. Armed with this evidence you can begin
making mitigation measures based on the suggestions in our user-friendly reports to take back your indoor environment and limit or
prevent allergic symptoms.
Success Story
A father and son in Petaluma, CA, had asthma and they both suffered disproportionately in their rental home. HBI found mold growing in the Master Bedroom, a Laundry Room filled with fragrant detergents, and two dirty, cat-hair-covered air filters crumpled up and stuffed into the central air return duct. Addressing these findings cost nearly nothing, and the son and husband almost immediately had fewer symptoms in the home.
HBI inspectors are trained to look for allergens in every
nook and cranny of a building. Whether it’s mold spores from your crawlspace,
dust mites in your carpet, or pollens on your windowsills, we can find it. Once
allergens are detected and identified, we make practical recommendations unique
to your home. We do not wear cologne or use fragrant soaps or deodorants that
might affect those with allergies.
HBI starts allergy investigations with a survey of occupants (e.g., Where do you have symptoms in the building? How often? Seasonal variations?, etc.). We then inspect the building and form a hypothesis about potential contaminant sources and pathways. Often times we take air, swab, or dust samples to our lab for more thorough analysis. Qualifications
My grandfather studied medicine in San Francisco, and was an allergist for many years in Stockton, California. When other people got sick, our family got allergies. Later in my own life I learned detection and sample collection methods to accurately identify allergens in buildings. Most of what I know about allergen sampling came from a 400-hour course through the Institute for Building Biology and Ecology. We use only the best equipment and labs for our inspections.
